Inner Groove

Inner Groove is the inventory of a record collection: vinyl, CDs and cassettes. It rebuilds the real layout — rooms, furniture, cubbies, the order of the records on the shelf — and keeps track of plays, wished-for records and the collection's statistics.

Your data lives on the device and, if you want, in your private iCloud: no account to create, no server of ours. For iPhone and iPad, in eight languages.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a record?
From the “+” button: with the barcode, with a photo of the cover, by searching for title or artist, or by typing it in. A record typed by hand can be completed later with “Complete online”, which fills in only what is missing.

Search doesn't find my edition.
The data comes from MusicBrainz, an open catalog compiled by volunteers: not every edition is there. You can always enter the record by hand and complete it later.

Why doesn't the cover come from the catalog?
Covers are copyrighted works, owned by labels and designers, not by online catalogs. That's why Inner Groove doesn't download them: the cover is the photo you take of your record, when you add it or later from its page, and it stays in your collection.

Records don't sync between iPhone and iPad.
Both devices need the same Apple Account and iCloud turned on for Inner Groove. Syncing is the system's own and isn't instant. If the app says it's working locally only, your data is safe on the device.

How do I make a backup?
From Settings: the JSON file is the full backup (records, covers, tracklists, plays, furniture), the CSV is a sheet for Numbers or Excel. Importing only adds: it doesn't change or delete what's already there.

Record data comes from MusicBrainz, run by the MetaBrainz Foundation. The core data (artists, titles, editions, barcodes) is in the public domain (CC0). Suggested genres come from MusicBrainz data distributed under the CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 licence. Inner Groove is free, with no ads or in-app purchases, and is not affiliated with MusicBrainz.
